Originally, the plan was to bury the dead of the Second World War in the main cemetery following the 1914/18 cemetery, but the high losses incurred in the fighting from December 1944 to March 1945 made the creation of a separate cemetery unavoidable. At the request of the Americans, 720 German casualties were reburied here. At the request of the town, which had carried out the construction of the new military cemetery up to this point, the Volksbund took over the further expansion measures in 1950.
