The main municipal cemetery is located in the northeast part of the city on Lindener Straße.
There, in several sections, lie the graves of a total of 716 war dead from both world wars and victims of Nazi tyranny. This number will increase once the investigation of grave section 27 a/b is complete.
Specifically:
- World War I Graveyard: In this section (Section 20), next to the cemetery chapel—which is well worth seeing—in the center of the cemetery, over 100 German soldiers from World War I are buried; they died in Wolfenbüttel or other military hospitals or were transferred there from war zones.
- World War II burial ground: with approximately 150 deceased—mostly victims of the 1944 bombing raids on Wolfenbüttel.
You can reach the two long rows of double graves from the cemetery entrance on Leipziger Str. by following the first cross path to the right.
Gerhard Kemmer, a student from Wolfenbüttel born on February 16, 1928, was assigned as a navigator in the Fire Department Hitler Youth. On January 14, 1944, he was fatally struck by an aerial mine during an American bombing raid. Grave location: Section 28, No. 594
Schoolboy Walter Bonneberg, born February 2, 1929, was also on duty with Gerhard Kemmer and was killed by the detonating bomb. His grave is located immediately next to Kemmer’s.
- Mass grave of 8 citizens of Wolfenbüttel murdered by Nazi terror in 1933, 1944, and 1945. This burial site in Section 29 is easy to find from the entrance on Leipziger Str. by following the first cross path to the left.
- Graveyard 13a/b: commemorates 316 Soviet soldiers and civilians who died here as prisoners of war and forced laborers at the Sternhaus military hospital, as well as 110 victims of Nazi punitive justice who were executed at the Wolfenbüttel prison.
- Graveyard 27a/b: This graveyard, containing the remains of approximately 300–400 people, is marked only by a stele. Research into the names of the deceased and the nature and circumstances of their deaths is still in its early stages. This as-yet-anonymous graveyard is located behind the section for bombing victims.
- Individual graves: Scattered throughout the cemetery grounds, particularly in Sections 9 and 13, there are also many individual graves.
