More than 700 victims of the war and National Socialist tyranny rest in this cemetery, which was established in 1942. The exact number of dead can no longer be determined. In detail: - in part C, a total of 156 concentration camp prisoners from various nations, of whom only 26 were later identified. The book "Nur Gott kennt ihre Namen - KZ-Züge auf der Heidebahn" ("Only God knows their names - concentration camp trains on the Heidebahn") provides detailed information about their horrific fate on April 10, 1945. (see source reference); - in part A1 probably more than 480 nameless Hamburg citizens who died in the alternative hospital built in Wintermoor in 1942 as a result of the severe injuries they suffered during the bombing raids on Hamburg in 1943. No memorial stone commemorates their fate. - 20 Hamburg bombing victims known by name in section A1; - Soviet prisoners of war possibly buried there in section B2, who were deployed in the construction of the alternative hospital and died; - a number of Soviet citizens who died in 1945 in section A2 and - 1 unknown German soldier who probably died on April 17, 1945 during the final battles in the Wintermoor area.
