Halfway between Krems and St. Pölten, near the famous Göttweig Abbey, lies the Oberwölbling military cemetery, above the town center, on the edge of the Dunkelstein Forest. On the approximately 15,000 square meter site, which rises slightly towards the back of the forest, 4,059 fallen soldiers of the Second World War from 362 communities in Lower Austria were buried. A slope divides the extensive burial grounds into two equal, gently sloping terraces, corresponding to the former natural shape of the terrain. Crosses made of Waldviertel granite, surmounted by a metal high cross, mark the graves in the cemetery. A covered seating area by the farm building offers visitors shelter from the weather and the opportunity to linger. The cemetery was inaugurated on September 17, 1983. The cemetery was transferred to the care of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior on January 1, 2011.
