Although there was no fighting in Spain during the world wars, there were German military graves in 68 communities: Crashed aircraft crews, submariners and marines who were washed up on the coast by the sea. The dead were recovered by employees of the Volksbund and reburied in Cuacos de Yuste.
It is often assumed that the dead of the "Condor Legion" are buried here. This is not the case: they were repatriated to Germany as early as 1939 and buried by their families in civilian cemeteries.
