Hamburg-Öjendorf

The Italian memorial complex is the final resting place for 5,849 Italian forced laborers from the entire northwest German region, the Ruhr area, the Neuengamme concentration camp and its satellite camps as well as civilians. After the conclusion of the German-Italian War Graves Agreement (1955), the site was designated on the Öjendorf cemetery, which had not yet been opened at the time. in 1957, the reburial of Italian war victims began at this central memorial site. The Italian war cemetery is located in the north of the Öjendorf cemetery. The graves are arranged in five groups around a high cross. They are set with cushion headstones on which the names of the dead are inscribed. The stones indicate whether the people buried here were Italian prisoners of war or civilians.
