Erfurt's main cemetery is a 56-hectare site on the western edge of the city. It contains seven cemeteries with victims of war and tyranny. the first cemetery was created in 1922 with 522 victims of the First World War. From 1939, the site was expanded to include 756 war dead, mostly members of the Wehrmacht. Just to the right of the main entrance rest 784 victims of bombing raids from the Second World War. Separated by a road, a cemetery with 155 civilian war victims from the Second World War is adjacent. The graves on both sides were marked again with granite crosses in 1993/94 on the basis of existing site plans. At the south-western end of the cemetery grounds is a fourth cemetery with 748 victims of the 1945 air raids, next to the site for Soviet war victims. Based on old documents, it emerged in 1994 that not only 113 Soviet soldiers are buried here. A total of 603 war dead who died as Eastern workers in Erfurt lie here. The cemetery for French war dead, which was established during the Second World War, originally contained 103 war victims. in 1948, 90 war dead were transferred from Erfurt to Berlin. 13 unidentified French soldiers still rest here.
