This burial site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since September 2023.
Aubérive, Marne Department
Here, 2,237 fallen German soldiers rest in individual graves. Another 3,124 fallen soldiers, 218 of whom are known by name, found their final resting place and place of honor in a mass grave.
The cemetery was established by the French military authorities and taken under the care of the Volksbund in November 1928.
In 1972, the Volksbund had the old wooden crosses replaced with stone grave markers and had the grounds landscaped.
Special Feature
In September 2023, UNESCO designated 139 World War I cemeteries as World Heritage Sites. Twenty-three German cemeteries are under the care of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V.—Aubérive is one of them.
